The prologue opens like a clean mecha test story, then tightens into something harsher: an argument about medical technology, fear, and who gets to control bodies deemed dangerous.
Its strongest choice is to put family warmth beside institutional violence. The people at Fólkvangr are not introduced as lore entries. They work, tease one another, worry, and celebrate. That ordinary warmth makes the assault feel like an intrusion instead of a set piece.
The birthday song is the blade
The birthday-song sequence is the image that stayed with me. Innocent counting and celebration are paired with lethal combat. The scene could have played as a child's sudden power fantasy. Instead, it lands as tragedy because Eri does not understand the cost of what is happening around her. The adults do.
Visually, the episode keeps returning to a sharp contrast: sterile interiors, deep-space darkness, and the Lfrith's bright data effects. The result is cold and ominous without becoming visually muddy. The machines look imposing, but the episode keeps its emotional center on the people inside and around them.
A clean entry point
It works without prior Gundam knowledge. There is enough political and technical context to understand the conflict, but the episode does not ask a newcomer to memorize a franchise history before caring. The emotional hook comes first.
As a standalone prologue, it is focused, readable, and cruel in exactly the right way. It makes the larger series feel less like a lore assignment and more like the aftermath of one family's worst day.
Verdict: 8.5/10. A strong entry point with a genuinely unsettling final movement.
